Elina Katara

The Mandalas (2010).

Inspired by the repetitious work put into making a rather un-useful, ornate object, Katara’s doilies are made from household dust. The dust-doilies resemble an everyday sand-mandala; symbolic of the repetitive, tedious domestic work in the creation of patterned handwork as well as in living our everyday lives.

Crocheting is a repetitious task and thus perfect for becoming lost in one’s thoughts. What remains of the everyday rush and racket is merely some dust. In the end, however, the chaos becomes a pattern, and the pattern, as an entity, can look beautiful from far.
